The BCA Basketball 2011-2012 Season Kicks Off!

The BCA Boy's basketball team season opened at AISB in Baneasa on Dec. 7. The emotions and excitement of their first game in a "real" gym were running high. They played with only 7 players, and were tired near the end. The final score doesn't reflect all the work they spent practicing, but they enjoyed playing a "real game."

Final score: AISB- 65 BCA- 27!

"In our next game, against ISB, things were a little bit different. We knew something was odd when we were told by the ISB guard to go to the "balloon" behind the school for the game. Then, once we were inside the balloon we looked at the "court" and noticed it was a tennis court with artificial grass! And so we played on the court in the balloon, and won the game 44-29!" - anonymous player.

The projected completion date of the building shell is December 15. Keep praying for thing to go smoothly! There will be lots of action in the next four weeks!

Update on the See BCA Through Campaign. As of Nov. 4 we have a total of $15,714 pledged or raised. Last Friday the 1st/2nd grade class had a plant sale and raised $205 for the campaign. We thank God for His provision so far! Please join us in praying for the rest to be raised soon.

It looks like they will be putting up the steel beams for the roof this week! It is exciting to see the progress of the building. Join us in praising God for the progress on the building and all the ways He has provided!

See BCA Through!!

The construction continues to move ahead! Each day it is looking more and more like a school!!

Thanks to many generous donations, we have the money in hand to finish the basic shell of our new facility. At the moment, however, we do not have enough to complete the project.
Right now BCA has a strategic opportunity. A weather-tight building would enable us to continue construction as funds become available. Windows will cost approximately $42,000 and doors $16,000. Raising these funds by November 7th will allow time for the windows and doors to be installed before winter hits. The timing of this seems rather daunting, but we are asking the Lord to continue to provide, as He has to this point.

Christ in the Old Testament

This year in the Secondary Chapels we studied Christ in the OT. Here is a great summary that was found on the web, it is part of a sermon from Tim Keller.

Here are some responses of students to the chapel theme this year:

I learned that Jesus was shown a lot in the Old Testament, which I had not realized before.
I never realized how much the Old Testament points to Jesus.
I learned that the Bible is true
I learned how everything was planned from the beginning, and how Jesus was with the people.
How God had a detailed plan to save his people and began to reveal it in the Old Testament.
I loved looking at Bible stories I was so used to, with different eyes.
Jesus is everywhere!
I learned that when Moses struck the rock, the rock represented Jesus.
Jesus is the Lion and the Lamb!
I learned you reap what you sow!

We are thankful for all the ways the Lord has worked in the lives of the students this year!

BCA Secondary Retreat Fall 2010

Each fall the BCA secondary students spend a few days at a wonderful conference center near Bran. It's a time for them to develop stronger relationships with each other and with the Lord! The retreat began with a 3 hour train ride north the city of Brasov!

This year our speaker was David Wright who shared with the students about developing a stronger relationship with the Lord.

BCA celebrated its 14th graduating class on June 4, 2010 at the Holy Trinity Baptist Church. We had two valedictorian speakers: Jon Cox and Sarah Mather.

Practice started back in January and the First BCA Musical, Seussical, Jr. was performed on April 24. Hours and hours of practices paid off in an amazing production enjoyed by over 200 people.

BCA Outdoor School 2010

The 7th and 8th Grade of BCA spent a weekend at Outdoor School! They had 4 days up at Camp Living Water, the Mather's camp, studying God's fabulous creation and thinking about God as creator of all!!

Each morning the students met for an overview of the program and instructions on what would take place during the day!

Friday they did a plot study and looked at a small 1 meter square of a field to find as much life as was there!
Then they worked in teams to record their observations

There were two hikes through the woods as they discussed the ecology of the forest

December was a month full of many activities at BCA!!

The Choir had their first concert for the BCA community on a beautiful snowy evening!!

Cafe Night was a big success as the secondary students gathered for dinner, games and a time just to be together!

On the last day of classes before Christmas break we had an all school chapel and were challenged to think more deeply about the birth of Christ by Miss Susan White, our school librarian.

On the elementary side of the street the children enjoyed making gingerbread houses and eating the candy as they decorated their houses!

Each year BCA students spend a day partnering with a local ministry. This helps the students to see needs beyond themselves and begins to give them experience in reaching out and meeting the needs of others. This year the students served at an orphanage, did a children's program at a pre-school, passed out fliers for a crises pregnancy center and worked at a school with young children from disadvantaged families.

5th and 6th Grade Science

Recently the 5th and 6th graders covered a science unit on solar energy - its advantages and disadvantages. At the end of the unit, the class read a piece of Native American folklore that expressed their thoughts on how the dark side of the earth got its light. The students were given an assignment to create their own stories of how the earth got light or how the sun came to be or something similar. Three students worked together to create the final product, complete with a few illustrations. The efforts of the 4 groups are shown and make quite interesting reading. Enjoy!

The Finding of the Frozen Sun

One cold day in Antarctica the sun, lonesome and lost, was floating in the sea, frozen. The penguins, polar bears, and seals had lasted without the sun for about a month. With little strength left they devised a plan to get the sun back in the sky. Their plan was for the penguins to fly up and rip off some cotton from the clouds to make ropes and pulleys. But since the penguins didn’t have much strength left they didn’t know if it would work. But they still had to find the sun before they tried. So the next day they went looking for the sun. After four or five hours they found the sun, at last, exactly 3,672 miles away from the island they lived on! They carried the sun on the polar bears back because it was a little frozen and not hot. When they got back to camp the penguins flew up and ripped the cotton off the clouds. When they had got back down the seals made ropes and pulleys and placed the sun back up in the sky! But the clouds were very angry at the penguins, so they cursed them to never be able to fly again and that is why penguins don’t fly today. Even though they were all very happy there was still one more problem, the sun was still a little bit frozen! They were never able to completely defrost it and so from that day on Antarctica has been a very cold place.

The Beat Box Sun

In the year 2142 the Beat-Box Major had disappeared from the face of the Earth. This man could beat-box living things into existence. For all that don’t know the Beat-Box; the Beat-Box Major was respected highly among The Beat-Box Fan Club. Speaking The Beat-Box Fan Club, otherwise known as The Beaty-Boxiers, all three of them were in a sauna known as the “SOLAR SAUNA.” Their names were Commander Dobby, the leader, and Anks and Yokes, his side-kicks. They were enjoying themselves, and beat-boxing to their hearts content when suddenly the Holographic Television, the H.T.V, came on. “THE SUN HAS D-D-IS-SA-APEA-E-E-D!!” The reporter froze right in front of them all. The H.T.V flashed off.
All of the Beaty-Boxiers looked out their windows. It was true. It was a lot darker outside and everything was freezing.
“Lucky to be in here,” said Commander Dobby.
“Yup,” replied Anks.
“Yup,” replied Yokes.
Commander Dobby looked around. Suddenly he came up with an idea. They could create Robotic Saunas to strap around them. That way they could walk outside and be warm. So they Beaty-Boxiers set to work…until they forgot that that would be breathing in the same air, over and over again. So they made little masks attached to the front of the Robotic Saunas to help breathing in other air.
“Now, these will run smoothly,” said Commander Dobby.
“Yep,” said Anks.
“Yep,” said Yokes.
But they were faced with another problem. How would the Robotic Saunas work? So Commander Dobby sat down and thought.
“Eureka!” he shouted. He set to work immediately. The way the Robotic Saunas would work, is the Beat-Box Fan Club would have to beat-box to charge it up.
So after the Robotic Saunas were made the Beaty-Boxiers stepped into them the walked outside and started beat-boxing.
“B T K K K K T KKKK B B B TTT (Wind Tactic),” beat-boxed Commander Dobby. This beat-boxing was enough to charge a Robotic Sauna for one hour. Soon Anks and Yokes were beat-boxing as well. Suddenly they saw weird creatures walking toward them. They had four nostrils and long snaky tongues. They were aliens. The Beaty-Boxiers ran into the sauna and locked the door.
Commander Dobby quickly started making another invention. It was the BeatGun. Commander Dobby had studied at the College of Inventing so he knew a lot. All you had to do was beat-box into a little microphone on the BeatGun and it would shoot out bullets. The Beaty-Boxiers carefully stepped outside and started beat-boxing crazily. Bullets were everywhere and soon the Aliens were gone. But one huge alien remained. It started beat-boxing through his nose! But the Beaty-Boxiers started beat-boxing and soon the alien was dead. They panted heavily. Then there was an earthquake. The Earth started shaking and in the midst of the Beaty-Boxier’s yells a low beat was heard. After that a low wind tactic saying, “Come… Down… Low… Below…the…Earth…I…am…The…Beat-Box…Major!” Commander Dobby stood staring. A hole opened up revealing a staircase. The Beat-Box Fan Club started down the staircase.
What happens next no one really knows but legend has it that the Beaty-Boxiers found The Beat Box Major and asked him to create a Sun. He said he couldn’t create something that big and powerful, but he could become the Sun. So he said, “I will try to make myself into a Sun.” So he did a complicated beat and became the Sun Soon the Earth was back to normal…only thunder was now a wind tactic from the Sun. The wind was scratches and rain was the B beat really fast causing a lot of spit. The lightning was the T beat. But hey it was still the Sun.

Each fall the secondary students of BCA get away from BCA for a time of spiritual refreshment, building relationships and FUN! This year 10 teachers and 45 students spent 3 days at Casa Elim in Bran. David Wright, a guidance counselor from CA, was the speaker and he focused on Faith.

2nd & 3rd Grade Chinese Celebration

After finishing a book called "These Are My People", which is about a missionary woman China, Mrs. Yorks' class made Chinese dumplings from scratch!!! They were taught by two Chinese girls in the class, Li Qiong and Wu Han. Each child made several dumplings and enjoyed eating them!

We had a great weekend despite the cold weather and rain. We had a nice hike along a river and skipped stones, worked more at starting a fire with a "fire bow", and played floor hockey (rain sent us indoors to the gym on Sat. afternoon). It was a nice weekend!

HOW MATCHES WORK

This is how matches work. Matches have phosphorous on one side of the match. Phosphorous is something that if it gets friction it burns. You rub the side of the match that has phosphorous against the match box. The match box is made to have rough edges. Don't try to light a match on the white smaller side which hold the matches because it doesn't work. On a match the red side on the match is where the phosphorous is. That is how a match works.

HOW TO THROW A FOOTBALL

The first step is to stand up and your feet should be apart from each other. Hold the ball (with your strong hand) by putting your pinky between the 2nd and 3rd stitching. Now turn your body to one side (optional) but look forward. Put your weak hand on the ball and bring the ball up (still with pinky in place) so that it is level with your chest. Next, bend your elbow down. Then pull your strong arm back and throw the ball forward, so the ball is rolling off your fingers. Try to throw the ball higher and it might make the ball fly farther. Then you should do the steps faster. Good luck!!!!

HOW TO MAKE SMASHED POTATOES

Cut off the skin of five potatoes, then cut them in half. Boil the potatoes in water in a pot until they get soft. Then take out all the water out without the potatoes, But be careful not to spill the hot potatoes. Put all the potatoes in a big bowl. Smash them until there are no big clumps of potato pieces. Put some butter. Put about 1 cup of milk in the smashed potatoes. Put 2 teaspoons of salt in it and mix it. Eat it!

HOW A GRAND PIANO WORKS

To make a note on the piano you press down a white key on the piano. When you press down a white key you can see the piano hammer hit the string under the piano the string vibrates like a guitar's strings. Under each piano key there is a string and above each string there is a hammer. Each key has it's own hammer which hits it's own string. Each key also has it's own note. There are white keys and black keys on the piano. The keys on the left are low notes and the keys on the right are high notes. You can create many beautiful songs on the piano.

I saw joy clearly

She was plump and round, but not at all ashamed of

her size that was so frequently laughed at.

She turned, her dark curls bouncing about, and

smiled with a glow I had never seen before.

Then I saw her eyes;

past the sparkle of beautiful green that shared love with the world.

I could see that her lifewas far from perfect.

There was pain in her past; that'swhy I didn't understand.

I heard her speak so gently, her loving words floated

across the room unheard by sadness and fury,

ignoredby loneliness and jealousy, and discarded by boredom

and doubt.

How could they not see as I did?

I felt so ignorant to have not noticed her before.

I hadbeen just like the others who never saw her true

beauty.

Her love astounded me: the gentleness of her

smile, the encouragement in her words, and the

excitement in her spirit.

She had chosen God's grace.

Chosen His grace over the sorrow that tried to conquer her life.

Her past was no longer her burden,

she was joy.

THE ANNUAL EGG DROP

The high school physics class is in a unit on momentum and energy. When a fast-moving object hits another object, its fate depends on how long it takes to come to a complete stop. A skydiver whose parachute fails to open might survive if they hit a haystack instead of bare ground. For the egg drop, the students had to design a container that would protect a raw egg so it would not break when dropped from the patio on the roof of BCA. Two of the students’ eggs survived, and two didn’t.

A weightlifter from Austria

As a boy he grew up oppressed

But this never caused him distress;
He dealt with what little he had.

After his run with weightlifting
He then appeared on the big screen.
When he moved here he had nothing
Except a goal: he wanted more.
He’s had his American dream
Now he is the governator.
He’s now a cultural icon
Everyone knows his movie lines
He’s Republican like Nixon
Yet for environment he pines.
His face is chilsed as a cliff

BCA has a vibrant and exciting Boy Scout program. Here are the guys on a recent "Father and Son" campout! Some of the things they learned was how to use an ax and start a fire. They also practiced wilderness survival skills, such as how to get water from the ground and starting a fire without a match.
